The Raman spectra of all-trans-β-apo-8′-carotenal in the S1 and T1 states have been recorded by a technique using 355 nm pump and 532 nm probe, mode-locked (76 MHz), Q-switched (800 Hz) pulse trains (pulse duration ≈100 ps). The technique takes advantage of the difference in the S1 and T1 lifetimes of the order of 10-11 and 10-6 s, respectively. Thus, the spectrum of the S1 state was obtained by subtraction between a pair of spectra with different delay times, i.e. 0 ps minus 500 ps. The spectrum of the T1 state was obtained by subtracting a probe-only spectrum from a pump-and-probe spectrum (delay time 500 ps).
