Mössbauer studies at 81 and 295°K and magnetic susceptibility measurements at 80–315°K were used for further characterization of a number of ferrous and ferric chelates with 2,2′-bipyridine N-oxide(N-bipyO) and 1,10-phenanthroline N-oxide (N-phenO), exhibiting room temperature magnetic moments intermediate between those corresponding to high- and low-spin compounds of these metal ions. On the basis of the overall evidence available, which consists of the above studies and spectral and conductance measurements previously reported, [Fe(N-bipyO)Cl2]·C2H5OH appears to be square-planar, characterized by a half-quenched spin (S = 1), while the series of [FeL3]X3(L = N-bipyO, N-phenO: X = ClO4, NO3) chelates seem to involve spin-free (S = 52)-spin-paired (S = 12) equilibria (6A1 → 2T2crossover). The low-spin isomer appears to be present in substantially larger amounts than the high-spin isomer in these ferric complexes.
