  • The ultra-violet and visible spectra of some transition metal chelates with N,N'-bis-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)ethylenediamine and N,N'-bis-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)-o-phenylenediamine and related compounds

Absorption spectra in the ultra-violet and visible regions of the spectrum have been obtained of solutions in methanol and chloroform of N,N'-bis-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)ethylenediamine and N,N'-bis-(o-hydroxybenzylidene)-o-phenylenediamine and their chelates with iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc. The spectra have been discussed qualitatively in terms of the electronic transitions which might give rise to the bands. The visible absorption bands of the chelates have been shown to be due mainly to transitions involving the metal—ligand bonds and to transitions within the unfilled metal “d” -shells, the former being modified by structural changes caused by metal ions of different sizes.
