Raman spectra of butyl through hexadecyl chloroacetates have been recorded in the liquid and crystalline states. The observed spectra, supplemented by spectral data of ethyl and propyl homologues, were analysed on the basis of the relations between the wavenumbers and the number of alkyl carbons atoms for conformation-sensitive vibrations, comparisons of the accordion-vibration wavenumbers between the chloroacetates and n-alkanes, and normal coordinate treatment. The vibrational analysis indicates that ethyl through hexadecyl chloroacetates in the crystalline state take the all-trans molecular conformation with the chloroacetoxy group incorporated.
