Dismutation and isomerization of trichlorotrifluoroethanes have been investigated on a Cr2O3/C catalyst which is used for industrial fluorination of chlorofluoroethanes by hydrogen fluoride. Transformation of CCl2F-CClF2 shows a rapid dismutation into the other halocarbons and a slow isomerization into CCl3-CF3. Transformation of CCl3-CF3 leads to a rapid irreversible deactivation of the catalyst. A kinetic study as demonstrated that there is an equilibrium between all the isomers which corresponds to successive dismutations with a particular reactivity for each compound. An XPS study of the surface has shown that the halogen content of the catalyst is very low, the active form being amorphous Cr2O3. Deactivation corresponds to a surface chromium enrichment with probable formation of a crystalline form of Cr2O3.
