The effect of temperature and magnetic field strength on 13C relaxation rates of gluconate and magnesium-gluconate solutions are determined at 7.0 and 11.7 Tesla. The primary component of relaxation along the gluconate backbone is dipolar in gluconate solutions with spin rotation relaxation a contributing factor in magnesium-gluconate solutions. Chemical shift anisotropy plays only a minor role in each case. The sites of metal-sugar interaction appear to involve primarily the Cl (CO) and C6 (CH2OH) ends of the gluconate chain.
