Betaine monohydrate, (CH3)3NCH2COO·H2O, crystallizes in the space group Pbca with a = 9.475(1), b = 11.512(2), c = 13.095Å and Z = 8. The crystal structure (RF = 0.059 for 1056 observed MO-Kα data) is built of zigzag chains running in the a direction, each comprising an alternate arrangement of the two molecular components linked together by hydrogen bonds. The betaine molecule nearly attains idealized Cs symmetry like its protonated couterpart in betaine hydrochloride.
