Co(ClO4)2 · 6H2O reacts with 1-alkyl-2-(arylazo)imidazoles [RaaiR′ where R = H (a), Me (b); R′ = Me (1/3), Et (2/4)] in methanol solution and gives brown crystalline compounds of [Co(RaaiR′)4](ClO4)2 · H2O (3, 4). They have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectral data and magnetic study. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of [Co(MeaaiMe)4](ClO4)2 · H2O (3b) determine a tetrahedral orientation of the ligands around the metal centre. The ligand acts as a monodentate imidazole-N donor system. Reaction of NaN3 or NH4CNS with [Co(RaaiR′)4]2+ has isolated [Co(RaaiR′)2X2] [X = N3 (5), NCS (6/7)]. Single-crystal X-ray structure determination in the case of Co(HaaiMe)2(NCS)2 has identified an octahedral geometry in which the ligand serves as bidentate N,N′-chelator. Redox studies show high potential Co(III)/Co(II) values and the ligand reduction is mainly azo centred.
