Acetochlorglucosamine was reacted with the presence of potassium t-butoxide in dimethyl-formamide with salicylaldehyde, salicyclic acid, methyl salicylate, methyl 3-methylsalicylate, salicylamide and 4-acetamidophenol to give, after de-O-acetylation, a series of aryl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranosides. The stability of the compounds in acid and alkali and their hydrolysis by the enzyme β-N-acetylglucosaminidase were briefly studied.
