The results from the optical and electron spin resonance studies of coloured calcium sulphide and strontium sulphide single crystals are presented. These results reveal that two main defect centres are present in these materials, one involving two electrons and, the other one electron. We relate these to F and F+-centres, respectively. These results also show that the two centres are inter-related and interact when both are present in the lattice. The data found for the F+-centre were found to be in good agreement with experimental and theoretical results.
