The drug shows remarkable histaminolytic and anti-anaphylactic effects and this antidepressant can be classified among the thymoleptic drugs between Imipramine and amitryptiline, based on clinical trials. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve shows only a sharp melting endotherm accompanied by decomposition or sublimation. No loss of weight is observed until melting. A strong loss of weight is observed during the melting process. Catalytic hydrogenation of 2-[methyl(2-nitrophenyl)-aminolbenzoic acid methylester leads to the corresponding aminoester, 2-[(2-arninophenyl)methylamino]benzoic acid methylester, which is then converted by cyclization with a strong base to the lactam 5,10-dihydro-5-methyl-11H-dibenzo[b,e][l,4]diazepin-l-one. Alkylation with 2-chloro-N, N-dimethylethanamine yields dibenzepin base, whose hydrochloride is formed by reaction with gaseous hydrochloric acid in ethanolic solution. Dibenzepin hydrochloride is a very stable substance; its degradation could only be observed in acid solution under drastic conditions.
