Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the handling and characterization of synthetic retinoic acid analogs. The synthetic retinoids have structural similarity to the natural compounds in that they possess the characteristic lipophilic head group and polar terminus separated by a spacer group. Generally, the trend in the synthesis of analogs of (E)-retinoic acid has been the design of more stable, readily manipulatable species. Therefore, the care with which they are treated under experimental conditions is generally dependent on their structural similarity to the natural retinoid skeleton. Generally, the greater the number of conjugated olefinic bonds present in the structure, the more caution should be exercised in its use in the laboratory. The chapter presents procedures presented that have been employed in the preparation, characterization, storage, and handling of (E)-retinoic acid and its synthetic analogs.
