Toxicologic studies have been performed on a preparation of p-tertiary octylphenoxy-polyethoxy ethanols (Triton X-450) of average molecular weight of about 2000 with an ethylene oxide content averaging about 40.Administration of single oral doses of tritium-labeled material to rats and dogs indicated very limited absorption. An attempt to obtain an oral LD50 in rats placed the value at greater than 28 g/kg. Additional data indicate that p-tertiary octylphenoxy-polyethoxy ethanols of average ethylene oxide content of about 12 exhibit the greatest acute oral toxicity.Addition of X-405 in concentrations up to 5% to the diet of rats and dogs for a period of 3 months had no effect on survival, growth, food consumption, hematologic values, urine concentration of reducing substances or protein, organ to body weight ratios, or histopathologic findings. Similarly, addition in concentrations up to 1.4% to the diet of rats for a period of two years was without effect on the same parameters of measurement.
