Soil acidification is one of the most serious “soil diseases” leading to poisonous metal ions release to environment, especially Al3+. To avoid plant poisoned by these ions, it should be a good option that slowing growth rate down at low pH value. Methyl 1-naphthylacetate (MENA), a derivative of 1-naphthylacetic acid, is commonly used for adjusting plant growth. Herein, a pH-responsive cellulose material was prepared in urea/NaOH/water solvent system for MENA microcapsules. Carboxyethyl groups and benzyl groups were introduced onto cellulose backbones without using any other catalyst to form amphiphilic molecules, which could be used as a surfactant. The amphiphilic cellulose derivative was further crosslinked with polyurea generated by isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and water. The cellulose based material showed slow release rate at low pH value (pH = 4) to avoid plants absorbing poisonous ions, whereas showed fast release at neutral condition to accelerate plant growth rate.
