This paper investigated the effect of electric current on the stability of bound chlorides and dissected its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that at the early stage of electrochemical desalination, increasing the current density decreased both the residual free chloride concentration and the bound chloride concentration. At the later stage, however, the current density exerted negligible effects on bound chloride release and free chloride removal. Also, the decreasing rate of both bound chloride and free chloride concentrations was higher in the first 4 weeks than in the last 4 weeks. Moreover, an increasing trend of Ca(OH)2 generation was observed while the decomposition of C-S-H gels and the Friedel's salt occurred. Taken together, the desorption of physically absorbed chlorides and the decomposition of C-S-H played major roles in the release of bound chlorides. After electrochemical desalination, the isothermal adsorption models better appraised the relationship between bound chloride and free chloride.
