The stereoselective hydrogenation of 2-Butyne-1,4-diol (cas 110-65-6) into cis-2-butene-1,4-diol was studied over palladium supported on metal–organic coordination polymers of different topology (methanol, 293 K, PH2 = 1 atm). 3D-metal–organic frameworks MOF-5 (Zn4O(BDC)3, BDC = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate), IRMOF-3 (Zn4O(ABDC)3, ABDC = aminobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate), a 1D-metal–organic coordination polymer (MOCP) [Zn(pz25dc)(DMF)2] (where pz25dc = pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylate), and host–guest materials, e.g. MOF-5 containing encapsulated calix[4]arenes of different structures were used for Pd deposition. The activity and selectivity of 2-butyne-1,4-diol hydrogenation depend remarkably on the network topology, host–guest properties and organic ligand nature that control the donor–acceptor interaction with the substrate, and on the Pd dispersion. A higher activity for Pd on linear heteroaromatic MOCP as compared to conventional Pd/C was found.
