The excess volume of (3-methoxypropionitrile + water) was studied precisely, at several temperatures in the immediate vicinity of the upper critical solution temperature, using a dilution dilatometer. The experimental results, covering reduced temperatures from ϵ = −0.042 to ϵ = +0.0065 where ϵ = (T−Tc)Tc, were used to verify the theoretically predicted cirtical exponents. Analysis of the isotherm closest to the U.C.S.T. was also carried out in terms of the scaling equation of state. It was found, as had been suggested by Levelt Sengers,(4) that the experiment may only support the theoretical predictions in the field since the accuracy is still rather poor.
