The synthesis and aqueous swelling properties of a new family of crystalline-rubbery hydrogels based on poly (ethylene glycols) (PEG) and 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyranyl-2-methyl-(3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxylate) are described. Their use as monolithic delivery systems for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is presented and compared with the delivery of PGE2 from urethane crystalline-rubbery poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) hydrogels of similar crystal-linity and swelling. The fractional-release/time plots for PGE2 from devices of identical geometry and drug loading, but based on the two different crosslinking structures were essentially superimposable.
