The polarographic and voltammetric behavior of oxygen, ferrocene, bisbiphenylchromium(I) tetraphenyloborate, TlClO4, Zn(CF3SO3)2, Cd(CF3SO3)2, Cu(CF3SO3)2, Mn(CF3SO3)2, Ni(ClO4)2 · 2H2O, Co(CF3SO3)2 and Pb(CF3SO3)2 has been studied in 2,2-thiodiethanol. The polarographic behavior of Zn(CF3SO3)2, Cd(CF3SO3)2 and Cu(CF3SO3)2 has also been studied in ethanol and acetonitrile. Employing bisbiphenyl-chromium(I)/bisbiphenylchromium(O) as a reference redox system, Gibbs energies of transfer from acetonitrile and from ethanol into 2,2-thiodiethanol have been calculated for Tl+, Ag+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ from the half-wave potentials of those electrode processes that were polarographically reversible. The donor properties of 2,2′-thiodiethanol as a “hard” donor were found to be between methanol (donor number 19) and trimethyl phosphate (donor number 23).
