Reactions of bis (β-diketonato) aluminium (III)-di-μ-isopropoxo di-isopropoxo aluminium(III), [(β-diketo)2Al(μ-OPri)2Al(OPri)2], with 2-mercaptoethanol, [HO(CH2)2 SH], and 2,2′-thiodiethanol, [HO(CH2)2S(CH2)2OH], in 1:1 stoichiometry have resulted in the synthesis of [(β-diketo)2Al(μ-OPrii)2[(βdiketo)2Al(μ-OPri)2Al{O(CH2)2S}]n and [(β-diketo)2Al(μ-OPri)2Al{O(CH2)2S(CH2)2O}]n[(β-diketo)2Al(μ-OPri)2]n, respectively (where n = 1 for ethylacetoacetato and n = 2 for acetylacetonato). These are soluble in common organic solvents. Suitable structures based on elemental analysis, molecular weight measurements, IR and NMR (1H, 13C and 27Al) spectral studies have been proposed. 27Al spectra show the presence of both octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated aluminium sites.
