Neuropeptide Y (NPY) was first purified and isolation from porcine brain in 1982, and consists of 36 amino acids. NPY is distributed in the brain, sympathetic nervous system, and adrenal gland. Five distinct NPY receptors have been cloned, namely Y1, Y2, Y4, Y5, and y6, as seven transmembrane G (Gi and G0) protein-coupled receptors. NPY potently increases food intake and decreases energy expenditure. Moreover, NPY modulates memory processes, depressive state, anxiety, stress, and seizure.
