A systematic review of the seemingly simple cobalt(II) carboxylate showcases the remarkably rich and complex chemistry of compounds with this stoichiometry and oxidation state. The aim was to highlight the most common structural motifs observed and discuss chemical trends when carboxylate ligands bind to cobalt(II) to form complexes ranging from mononuclear through to higher nuclearity structures up to Co36. A brief discussion on polymeric cobalt carboxylate complexes is also included. Catalytic applications of cobalt(II) carboxylates are also reviewed with reference to the preceding structural discussion: these include the industrially important oxidation of alkanes and arenes, oxidative dehydrogenation, carboxylation and carbonylation of alkanes, methoxycarbonylation of olefins and chloroalkanes, as well as polymerization.
