Consumption of high calorie diets is a major contributor to obesity, which is a rising health problem in many parts of the world. Some hormones, produced and secreted in the gastrointestinal tract, play important roles in food intake regulation. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is one of the major gut hormones and it binds its receptors to initiate cellular signalling that culminate into appetite suppression. The role of the gut peptide in regulating food intake is well known, and several studies have reported beneficial effects and mechanisms of some foods on CCK secretion. This article discusses the structure and appetite-regulating capabilities of CCK, as well as foods and their components that stimulate CCK secretion in cultured cells, animal model and humans, with the potential to result in appetite suppression.
