Demethylation of N-methyl group in N-methyl-N-arylmethyl-α-amino esters was accomplished by the oxidation of the amino group using the N-iodosuccinimide (NIS)/acetonitrile system followed by treatment with O-methylhydroxylamine hydrochloride.
