The thermal degradation behaviour of bismuth carbonate-chloroparaffin-polypropylene ternary mixtures can mostly be accounted for on the basis of that of bismuth carbonate-chloroparaffin and of chloroparaffin-polypropylene binary mixtures. For example, polypropylene volatilises in the ternary mixtures to a mixture of hydrocarbons whose composition is similar to that obtained from binary chloroparaffin-polypropylene mixtures. However, stabilisation of polypropylene and the formation of metallic bismuth is typical of ternary mixtures. Mechanisms are proposed which may account for behaviours peculiar to ternary mixtures. The so-called Bi-Cl fire retardant ‘synergism’ is interpreted on the basis of the thermal degradation characteristics of the ternary mixtures.
