Potassium [14C, 13C, 15N]cyanide and [14C, 13C, 15N]-2-hydroxy-4-methylvalero-nitrile [as(5)] are incorporated into xanthocillin-X-monomethyl ether (1) but label appears only in the O-methyl group. The isocyanide functions of (1) are not labelled by [2 14C]-methionine. Potassium [14C]cyanate, [14C]carbamyl phosphate, and [ureido-14C]citrulline are incorporated into (1) to an insignificant extent. Evidence is presented that the nitrogen atoms in (1) derive primarily from the amino group of tyrosine.
