Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the various nerve and chemical-warfare agents. The offensive use of chemical agents continues to grow in some nations and terrorist organizations. Chemical agents can be dispersed over large areas or can penetrate structures, kill or sicken entire populations, and overwhelm medical resources. Depending on the chemical agent or combination of agents, the effects can be immediate or delayed incapacitation, disorientation, or death. Many of the common classic chemical agents can be produced inexpensively and quietly and stored indefinitely. The other types of warfare agents—namely, nerve agents—are extremely toxic chemicals. The pragmatic choice for a small-unit terrorist action that includes chemical-weapon deployment is the highly vaporizable G-series of nerve agents. Although all the nerve agents can be absorbed through the skin, the G agents require larger topical doses for toxicity because they are volatile. Thus, the primary risk associated with these agents is the inhalation of the vapor or aerosol.
