Two new s-block metal-containing coordination polymers, viz. [M(ona)]n (M = Ba (1), Ca (2); ona = 2‑hydroxylnicotinic anion), have been synthesized under hydrothermal condition. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis discloses that both 1 and 2 display two-dimensional wave-like layer construction. The involved in situ substitution reaction was studied in detail and it was found that the compounds can be generated by reacting MO (M = Ba, Ca) with either 2‑mercaptonicotinic acid (H2mna) or 2‑hydroxylnicotinic acid (H2ona). 1 and 2 were further characterized by CHN elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Besides, the obtained s-block metal-containing coordination polymers exhibited good thermal stability as revealed by thermogravimetric analysis. Moreover, their solid-state photoluminescent properties were also investigated at room temperature.
