  • Removal of sulfides from water using a hybrid ion exchanger containing manganese(IV) oxide
  • Add time:08/29/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

A hybrid ion exchanger (HIX) containing manganese(IV) oxide based on a macroporous, strongly basic anion exchanger as supporting material was obtained. The introduced MnO2 (26.4% Mn) was amorphous and evenly distributed within the polymer matrix. The hybrid material was used for removal of sulfides from anoxic aqueous solutions with 100–500 mg S2–/dm3 concentrations and pH in the range 12.0-14.0. The highest sorption capacity exhibited by the sorbent was 152.0 mg S2-/g. Approximately 60% of dissolved sulfides were oxidized to S2O32- and repelled from the HIX structure to the aqueous phase of the examined systems, whereas 15% was bound with the sorbent beads in the form of polysulfides. Based on the identified sulfide adsorption and oxidation products, the mechanism of the sulfide removal process using synthesized hybrid material is suggested.
