Syntheses of vanadium complexes of higher oxidation states (+IV and +V) are mostly influenced by metal precursors, the nature of the ligands, reaction conditions, solvents involved etc. The resulting complexes are generally associated with oxido-, dioxido-, oxidoalkoxido, oxidohydroxido groups etc. (i.e., at least one oxido group) to vanadium and end up with varied nuclearity. This review examines the synthetic protocols of such vanadium complexes of higher nuclearity (dinuclear, trinuclear, tetranuclear etc.) and arranges them systematically according to different oxidovanadium groups associated with them and ascending order of their nuclearity starting with dinuclear complexes. Oxidoperoxidovanadium(V) complexes of higher nuclearity prepared either from different precursors or from the corresponding vanadium complexes have also been included at the end. Structures of the complexes, supported by single crystal X-ray and spectroscopic studies, their reactivities, electrochemical and other properties, enrich the diverse coordination chemistry of vanadium of higher nuclearity.
