The degassing of 2014 aluminium powder has been studied using a range of techniques. Bulk degassing studies in a vacuum hot press show water evolution from 100° to 400°C coupled with hydrogen evolution above 300°C. Powder thermal conductivity and degassing rates at 450°C may be enhanced by using an inert gas atmosphere and by cold prepressing the powder at 5–10 MPa. XPS has been undertaken on powder specimens incrementally degassed in a process chamber connected to the spectrometer. This indicates an evolution of surface oxide species with decreasing hydroxide and increasing oxide components as temperature and time increase above 350°C. This correlates with the temperature range for hydrogen evolution in bulk degassing and provides a means of quantifying a lower bound to bulk degassing times.
