A high degree of reproducibility for the thermal decomposition of lithium azide has been achieved. The pressure-time plots show induction, acceleratory and decay periods. The latter two are described by the Avrami-Erofeyev equation and the contracting sphere equation respectively. The activation energies have been determined for all three phases of decomposition. The essential role of lithium atoms and of metal in the decomposition has been determined, and a theoretical explanation of the decomposition is presented. Preirradiation of lithium azide with u.v. light greatly accelerates the subsequent thermal decomposition.
