The selective oxidation of lactams to cyclic imides is an important transformation considering the wide range of applications in the synthesis of pharmaceutical drugs and intermediates. This chapter highlights the metal- and nonmetal-mediated oxidative transformations of lactams, specifically pyrrolidones, piperidones, 2-(2-oxopiperidin-3-yl)isoindoline-1,3-diones, and hexahydro-2H-azepin-2-ones (caprolactams) to the corresponding cyclic imides by using various conditions. The effects of ring size of lactams, selectivity of oxidizing reagents, mechanistic investigations, and the limitations of some oxidative transformations are also discussed.
