In the ionic compound potassium amide (KNH2) the amide ions (NH2−) are displaying orientational disorder in the tetragonal and cubic high-temperature phases while they are orientationally ordered in the monoclinic low-temperature phase. From high-resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements in all three phases of KND2 the time-averaged probability density function of the deuterons was determined in detail. Information on the amide dynamics is provided by quasielastic incoherent neutron scattering experiments. Models for the reorientational processes, their time scales, and the respective activation energies were deduced from the data. The elastic incoherent structure factor suggests a time-averaged density distribution in very good agreement with the results of the diffraction experiments.
