The absorption and circular dichroism (c.d.) spectra of poly(l-ornithine) (PLO) and poly(l-α,γ-diaminobutyric acid) (PLDA) azo dye complexes were measured. Two dichroic bands associated with the blue shifted absorption bands of methyl orange (MO) at around 370 nm were observed by complex formation between the polypeptides and the dye. The magnitude of induced c.d. of the PLO-MO complex was dependent on pH, residue/dye ratio, time after preparing the mixed solution, stirring of solution, counter halogens to ω-amine, temperature and molecular weight. The PLDA-MO complex inverts the sign of induced c.d. when heating. The induced c.d. spectrum of the PLO-MO complex shows reversible thermal change when heating, while the PLDA-MO complex shows irreversible change. The results of induced c.d. including the poly(l-lysine)-azo dye complexes were discussed in terms of the number of methylene groups in the side chain.
