Feeding of the carcinogen 2-aminoanthraquinone (2-AAQ) to female Fischer 344 rats increased the content of liver cytochrome P-450, cytochrome b5, and increased the activity of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase as early as 2 weeks. Benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase, epoxide hydrolase, and α-naphthol-O-glucuronyl transferase also showed higher activities. Feeding of 2-AAQ beyond 4 weeks also increased the activities of N-demethylases, aniline hydroxylase, and azodye reductase, thus showing a time-dependent induction of these enzyme activities. After feeding 2-AAQ for 2, 4, 8, or 14 weeks the rats were returned to control diet. The enzyme activities assayed during this recovery period remained elevated in rats fed 2-AAQ for 14 weeks and control diet for 1 or 2 weeks, or fed 2-AAQ for 8 weeks and control diet for 2 or 4 weeks. Enzyme activities returned to control levels or lower in rats fed 2-AAQ for 2 or 4 weeks and then fed control diet.
