Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) (CAS – 118-74-1) is considered as a persistent environmental pollutant. It is a white crystalline solid that has been historically used in agriculture and in the production of fireworks, ammunition, and synthetic rubber. Although it is not currently used in the United States, HCB is still produced as a by-product in the manufacture of organic chemicals and in the burning of municipal waste. HCB is degraded slowly, can adhere to soil, and therefore can remain in sediments and lakes for long periods of time. Studies on the detection, scope of contamination, air–soil–water movement and degradation of HCB, and its metabolites are continuously conducted worldwide. Possible routes of low-level exposure are through ingestion of contaminated food and water, inhalation, and direct contact with soil, in utero, and via breast milk. HCB primarily targets the liver and long-term exposure can cause porphyria cutanea tarda, a disease condition characterized by changes in skin color, skin sores, arthritis, and neurologic problems.
