A compound previously reported to be tetramethylammonium hydroxide monohydrate is re-examined, and actually found to be a heretofore unknown dihydrate. Stoichiometric considerations suggest that this dihydrate is a channel framework clathrate hydrate. Authentic tetramethylammonium hydroxide monohydrate has also been prepared; the infrared spectrum of this compound is consonant with the presence of a planar (OH−·H2O)2 cluster of C2h symmetry, similar to that found in lithium hydroxide monohydrate. Some observations on the nature of the trihydrate are discussed.
