Somatostatin is a naturally occurring peptide found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, the D (δ) cells of the pancreatic islets and gastrointestinal tract and in many other structures. It exists as two active forms—somatostatin-14 (primary form in the brain and pancreatic islets) and somatostatin-28 (primary form in the gut). Somatostatin inhibits the secretion of growth hormone (GH; somatotropin), insulin, glucagon, and gut hormones, and is generally inhibitory to gastrointestinal motility and exocrine secretion. The hormone exerts its effects through activation of five G-protein coupled receptors, designated SSTR1-SSTR5, with two SSTR2 subtypes, SSTR2A and SSTR2B due to alternative splicing.
