1.1. When either radioactive eicosa-11,14-dienoic acid or eicosa-11-enoic acid was incubated with rat liver microsomes or fed to rats which were maintained on a fat-deficient diet, the products of desaturation were respectively eicosa-5,11,14-trienoic acid (cas 15541-36-3) and eicosa-5, 11-dienoic acid rather than the expected products, eicosa-8, 11,14-trienoic acid and eicosa-8,11-dienoic acid. These findings suggest that the only pathway for arachidonate biosynthesis is as follows: 9,12–18:2 → 6,9,12–18:3 → 8,11,14–20:3 → 5,8,11,14–20:4. The pathway 9,12–18:2 →11,14–20:2 → 8,11,14–20:3 → 5,8,11,14–20:4 probably does not contribute to the biosynthesis of arachidonate. In a similar way 5,8,11–20:3 is produced only by the pathway 9–18:1 → 6,9–18:2 → 8,11–20:2 → 5,8,11–20:3 rather than by the pathway 9–18:1 → n-20:1 → 8,11–20:2 → 5,8,11–20:3.2.2. Eicosa-11-enoic acid is a substrate for retrocon version.
