Publisher SummaryAromatic sulfonic acids derived from benzene, naphthalene, anthracene and anthraquinone, and their amino-and hydroxysubstituted derivatives are important intermediates in the production of synthetic dyes. Alkyl- and alkylarylsulfonic acids are widely used as anionic surface-active agents. There is a need for rapid quantitative analytical methods for such an industrially important class of compounds. Most synthetic water-soluble dyes contain one or more sulfonic groups that improve their solubility in water, and can be analyzed using similar methods to those for other sulfonic acids. Because most these compounds possess aromatic rings, their detection does not represent any serious problem and can be performed conveniently using conventional UV detectors at 254 or 280 nm. Sulfonic acids are very strong organic acids with acidity comparable to that of strong mineral acids. Therefore, high-performance liquid column chromatography (HPLC) is potentially superior to other methods for the analysis of sulfonic acids. Successful separations of sulfonic acids have been achieved by ion-pair chromatography. In addition, reversed-phase ion-pair systems are more convenient and simpler to operate than those in normal-phase ion-pair chromatography.
