Infrared spectrometry was used to characterize the surface adducts formed on interaction of Cr(CO)6 and Mo(CO)6 with partially hydroxylated MgAl2O4 (spinel) prepared in a high-surface-area form. Cr(CO)6 is molecularly adsorbed and gives four characteristic IR absorption bands at 1890 cm-1 (O-bonded CO) and at 2123, 2050 and 2010 cm-1 (remaining CO ligands). Mo(CO)6 partially decomposes on interaction with MgAl2O4. In addition to the IR absorption bands corresponding to the hexacarbonyl, others were observed and assigned to subcarbonyl species.
