The synthesis, spectral characterisation and X-ray structure determination of the zinc(II) norbornen-2,3 dicarboxylate [Zn(cis-2,3-ndc)-(l-methylimidazole) 2(H2O)]∞ (1) (cis-2,3-ndc = bicyclo[2,2,1]-hept-5-ene-2,3-cis-dicarboxylic acid) are described. It crystallises in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The crystal structure of 1 consists of polymeric chains which propagate along the c axis. The structure is stabilised by extended hydrogen bonds involving adjacent chains and water molecules. The metal centres display a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The norbornenedicarboxylic acid acts as a syn-bound O,O′-bridging ligand.
