2-Isopropenylnaphthalene (2-IPN) can be polymerized anionically at −78°C using n-butyllithium as initiator. The “living end” of this polymer can initiate further polymerization. Thus by the addition of thoroughly purified 1,3-butadiene to the polymerization mixture, diblock copolymers of the type poly(2-isopropenylnaphthalene-b-butadiene) resulted. Depending upon the solvent used, the butadiene block shows different microstructures (determined by i.r. spectroscopy) in these diblock copolymers. Further addition of 2-IPN on the “living” diblock copolymers by a stepwise technique resulted in the formation of triblock copolymers of the type poly(2-isopropenylnaphthalene-b-butadiene-b-2-isopropenylnaphthalene). The molecular weights (Mw) of these polymers ranged between 66,000 and 230,000 depending upon the experimental conditions; Mw/Mn lay in the range 1.08–1.25. The incorporation of butadiene in these copolymers was in the range 11–80% by weight. The compositions and the molecular weight distributions of the copolymers were determined by the GPC-two-detector method; the structures were established by DTA-DSC measurements and by electron microscopy. Depending on their comonomer ratio, the triblock copolymers show good rubber elasticity similar to the corresponding styrene-butadiene triblock copolymers.
