  • Effects of steric hindrance and of bond type on electronic absorption spectra of certain 8-quinolinolates☆

Blue shifts in the spectral maxima of the 2-methyl 8-quinolinolates relative to the 8-quinolinolates of gallium, indium and thallium (III) appear to be due to steric hindrance and vary in the expected inverse relationship with respect to the size of the metal ion. In the absence of steric hindrance, large red shifts of the low-frequency band are found for a chelate when compared to the ligand itself. From a comparison of spectra for zinc and magnesium chelates, it appears that a large red shift and an enhanced intensity of the low-frequency band are associated with a strong metal—nitrogen (predominantly covalent) bond whereas a stronger metal—oxygen (predominantly ionic) bond is associated with a smaller shift and, particularly, a small absorptivity of the low-frequency band.
