The salivary glands are exocrine organs that secrete the complex fluid of saliva through ducts into the external environment. This article has four critical sections that focus on (1) anatomy of the minor and major salivary glands, (2) cellular architecture of parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, (3) regulation of stimulated secretion, and (4) components and functions of saliva.
