Lead CASRN (7439-92-1) is a soft, malleable post-transition metal. It was one of the first metals used by humans (since 6400 BCE), as found in modern-day Turkey. It has a wide variety of uses, such as batteries, paints, sheet metal, bearings, solder, piping, and ammunition. However, its well-established bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity with low exposure levels has led to the enactment of strict limits on its use and potential exposure. Lead, at certain exposure levels, is a poisonous substance to animals and humans. It damages the nervous system and causes brain disorders, with children being most sensitive. It is a neurotoxin that can accumulate in both soft tissue and bones. It has been recommended that blood levels above 5 mg dl−1 should be considered adverse.
