Clophen A-30 (CA-30) or hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were given daily by gavage to lactating rhesus monkeys. Two animals received 16 mg of CA-30/kg for 29 days and one received the same amount for 22 days. Their infants at the time of sacrifice were 112, 149, and 68 days old, respectively. Three other animals received 64 mg of HCB/kg for 22, 38, and 60 days. Their infants were 140, 99, and 81 days old, respectively, when necropsied. Histopathological examination of the CA-30 infants revealed degenerative changes of slight to moderate degree of severity in the liver (centrolobular karyopycnosis and vesiculation), kidneys (vacuolation and dilation of the proximal tubules), and CNS (demyelination, cerebellar granular layer thinning, and reactive gliosis). The HCB infants showed only mild degenerative changes in the kidney (vacuolation of the proximal tubules) and liver (centrolobular hypertrophy and fatty metamorphosis). Nursing infant rhesus whose mothers received CA-30 or HCB seem to be less susceptible than adults.
