Gels of Bentone 38—Celite (I:I) in toluence canb e spread on glass plates in the usual way for thin-layer chromatography. After evaporation of the solvent, they form very thin lipophilic films which are suitable for the separation of isomeric polyphenyls. The following compounds were chromatographed: biphenyl, three terphenyls, nine quaterphenyls, anthracene, phenanthrene and triphenylene. As an eluent, n-heptane wasuse. Multiple development was found to improve the separation of the compounds with a low RF value.Comparison of the results with those obtained on a more conventional adsorbent, such as alumina, showed that the RF values on Bentone 38 depended more on structure (ortho, meta or para) and less on molecular weight.Phenanthrene and anthracene, which impede the quantitative determination of terphenyls on alumina, can be excellently separated from the terphenyls on Bentone 38.Accordingly, chromatography on Bentone 38 may be considered a useful supplementary method to that on a alumina.
