    Rare earth fluorescent materials with appropriate doping can realize emission from ultraviolet to mid-infrared to satisfy their variety of applications. The choice of host matrix and doping ions are crucial for intense fluorescent outputs and selective emission profiles. Here, we report the facile preparation of Vernier phase yttrium oxyfluoride (Y7O6F9) as promising host matrix which can realize high efficient quantum cutting, intense upconversion and downshifting emission from visible to mid-infrared through Ho3+/Yb3+ codoping. The stepwise preparation procedure involves the synthesis of YF3 nano-octahedra by precipitation method in water solution and subsequent calcination of YF3 octahedra to Y7O6F9 powders at appropriate temperature. Cyan, green, red upconversion and especially the near- and mid-infrared downshifting emission were observed under the excitation of 980 nm LD. In addition, green downshifting and two-photon near-infrared quantum cutting were realized under the 450 nm excitation. The mechanism of upconversion, downshifting and the near-infrared quantum cutting was discussed. Our results indicate this Vernier phase Y7O6F9 have potential applications in displays, photovoltaics, lighting, and mid-infrared glass composites laser.
